Juneau Jul, 4 2009 | Full-day Auke Bay Wildlife Cruise with Lunch
Alaska’s name is derived directly from the Aluet word alaska and the Eskimo alakshak, which both mean “mainland.” Russia sold the “mainland” – a 663,267 square mile wilderness that stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the Bering Strait – to the United States in 1867 for $7.2 million dollars. That’s just two cents an acre! Juneau has been the capital since statehood was granted in 1959.
The Seven Seas Mariner is scheduled to dock in Juneau at 1:00pm. We will be greeted dockside at 1:30pm by representatives from Entrée Alaska bearing signs reading “Voyager Club”. We will depart by motor coach for a brief tour of Juneau’s historic district, past the Governor’s Mansion and Capitol Building en route to Auke Bay.
In picturesque Auke Bay just outside the city, we will board one of Alaska’s finest wildlife viewing vessels, for a cruise up the deep fjords of Stevens Passage and Lynn Canal. This area is rich in wildlife, maritime history and scenic beauty. A naturalist on board our high-speed catamaran will regale us with tales of the area’s unique history as well as share his expertise on the flora and fauna. We will make our way to Orca Point Lodge on remote Colt Island. This new day lodge combines comfortable rustic styling with beautiful views of the surrounding islands and mountains. Awaiting our arrival is a sumptuous buffet of grilled Alaska salmon and chicken and other delicious fare.
After our lunch we will re-board our private high speed vessel to continue our cruise in search of the many magnificent mammals and birds that call this pristine environment their home. We’ll glide past the majestic Chilkat Mountains, the vast Juneau Ice Field and its teeming glaciers, and Admiralty Island National Park in search of humpback whales, Orca whales, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, Dall porpoises, Sitka black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. You may choose to view the spectacle from the comfort of the heated spacious main cabin (with its picture windows) or from the outside observation deck. After our tour we will return to Auke Bay and the coach that awaits us to take us back to the Seven Seas Mariner at approximately 6:45pm. |
